The European Situation at a Glance

Informing Americans about the frantic first few weeks of the First World War.

This informative map of Europe was published in New York by C.S. Hammond & Company during the frenetic opening months of World War I. The late-June assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo ignited a diplomatic firestorm that rapidly spiraled beyond the Balkans. Austria-Hungary’s demands against Serbia were backed by promises of German support, while Russia, which regarded itself as a protector of Slavic interests in the Balkans, faced mounting pressure to support Serbia. Massive military mobilizations, failed diplomatic overtures, and an increasingly inflammatory press campaign continued through July, culminating in Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia on July 28 and the rapid expansion of the conflict across Europe in early August.

The image highlights the principal geopolitical blocs, the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente, in contrasting shades of red. A third pattern is reserved for Serbia, the “odd man out” and immediate flashpoint of the crisis. Tables along the top compare the populations and military strengths of the principal European powers, reducing the continent’s extraordinarily complicated diplomatic situation to a striking visual comparison. Particularly intriguing is the inclusion of Italy within the Triple Alliance, despite its declaration of neutrality on August 3. This may suggest that the map was hastily reissued or repackaged as the crisis developed, although the exact publication sequence remains uncertain.
