This tremendously detailed map of the area immediately around London was published in New York by J.H. Colton in 1855. A decorative border surrounds a skillfully engraved image that shows geographic features, urban areas, individual buildings, and transportation routes; many of which are labeled.

The density of London’s city center dissipates into the surrounding suburbs and countryside, though rapid growth in the latter half of the century would rapidly change it’s footprint along the River Thames (seen bisecting the image from east to west).
