Description

First described in William Camden’s Britannia in 1586, the Devil’s Arse (known alternatively today as Peak Cavern) is located in Derbyshire, England, and is one of the country’s largest natural cave systems. It has a long history as a haven for bandits and home of the last of Britain’s cave-dwellers (troglodytes).

They lived in small houses, shown in this anonymous print issued in the first half of the 18th century. Several figures provide some clue as to the immense scale of the cavern, whose name may have come from the ‘gassy’ sounds that emit when water flows through.
