Description

This dual image cartoon and group of contemporary advertisements was issued in the December 14, 1861 issue of Harper’s Weekly Magazine. The upper image shows an infant John Bull (personification of Britain) spoon feeding cash to the Rebellion in the form of a snake. The danger of such an apparently ignorant move is evident.

The lower cartoon is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the assumed poverty in the Confederacy. A Southerner is shown in a ramshackle house with a blanket (the Confederate Army) too small to cover his extremities (Virginia, Savannah, and Charleston). A candle stub drifts smoke across a map of the Confederate States…
