The Conquest of a Continent

A pictorial representation of the westward progress of the pioneer.’

This striking pictorial map was designed as a visual narrative of the westward expansion of the United States from its colonial beginnings to its continental reach. Rather than a conventional political image, the piece blends cartography with historical illustration, charting key migration routes such as the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express and annotating significant milestones in American settlement and transportation history.

The map’s color-coded depiction of territorial growth highlights major acquisitions like the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican Cession, illustrating the march from Atlantic footholds to the Pacific shore. Surrounding the central ‘continental conquest’ is a decorative border of vignettes portraying landmark events in American history, from early exploration to the post–World War I era, reinforcing themes of national growth and identity. Native Americans are respectfully treated throughout, though their extermination is largely overlooked.

Kaiser’s credible artwork was developed in collaboration with historian Clara Searle Painter and checked for accuracy by Agnes Larson, reflecting an intention to combine artistic narrative with scholarly research.
