Description
This fascinating guide to the campsites and landing fields across the United States was published in Chicago by Rand McNally in 1923. The information presented was compiled on behalf of the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) by the United States Touring Bureau, the Army Air Service, and the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America.
The various organizations (each outlined in the introduction) who played a role highlight the tremendous amount of work involved in compiling such a detailed list of facilities. Its 116 pages include an exhaustive list of campsites and landing fields, each listed with its various amenities. The book is organized by the various regional sections outlined in Roman numerals within the map.
Over 3,000 different fields are identified with green dots; with inset plans of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Boston showing further detail across the major urban centers. The verso presents an Auto Trails Map of the United States with tourist campsites highlighted in red. An index of state highway markers and trail signs highlights the disparate organization of road transportation in the early 1920s.
