Description

This marvelous bird’s eye view shows the bustling metropolis of New York City just a few years after the conclusion of the American Civil War. A sea of red brick stretches up Manhattan Island as far as the eye can see. Ships of all kinds crowd the waterways, while an early depiction of the Brooklyn Bridge dominates the right side of the scene (construction would not be complete until 1883). Dozens of other locations of interest are labeled along the bottom of the sheet.

The view was originally created in 1867 by the iconic American printmaking duo of Nathaniel Currier & James Ives. This is one of numerous reprints issued during the 20th century, probably in the 1930s, based on the texture and age of the laid paper.
