Description

This stunning view of the city of Chicago, Illinois was originally published in New York by Currier & Ives in 1874. This particular example is a later reproduction issued by Historic Urban Plans of Ithaca, New York, as indicated by the text in the lower right corner. The image remains unchanged from nearly a century earlier, with the vast metropolis on the edge of Lake Michigan depicted a mere three years after the Great Fire devastated its central business district.

The results of the rapid rebuilding efforts are shown, albeit with possible exaggeration, along with a harbor and river full of commercial shipping and pleasure craft of all varieties. Numerous locations of interest visible within the image such as Lincoln Park, the waterworks, Palmer House Hotel, and the Union Stockyards, are labeled along the bottom.
