Description

This view of Chicago, purported to be around 1890 according to the title, was actually first issued in 1874 by the firm of Currier & Ives. It highlights Chicago’s miraculous recovery from the Great Fire of 1871 from the perspective of Lake Michigan in the foreground.

A key in the upper right corner identifies twenty four separate locations within the city. The last two show major changes in the composition of the lake front between the late 19th century and when this view was published – 1931. It was printed in an issue of Fortune magazine as part of a historical piece on the Windy City.
