Description

This beautiful pictorial view of Annapolis, Maryland was designed and published in 1964, approximately 300 years after the city became the state capitol. The image, oriented with northwest at the top, presents ‘America’s Sailing Capital’ from the perspective of the inner harbor in the foreground.

Emphasis is given to the historic architecture and urban development enjoyed by the city during its 3 centuries of existence. As a result, the view displays a fascinating synthesis of ‘old’ and ‘new’, such as ships of the line shown adjacent to modern fishing trawlers.

The map was designed by the talented Rosalind Howe Sturges in 1964 and published locally by Historic Annapolis, Inc. According to Vassar College, home of her archives;

“Rosalind Howe Sturges Allen was an artist and architectural cartographer who pioneered the use of anachronistic maps which featured the architectural history of a place rather than its geographic features. She was born in 1907 to Mary Locke and Wallis Howe and graduated from Vassar College in 1928. She died in 1999.”

Sturges created numerous pictorial maps during her career focusing primarily on the Mid-Atlantic states and New England, including views of Vassar and Wellesley Colleges.
