Description
This wonderful collection of nine illustrations provides a visual overview of Chicago’s prominent new construction on the eve of the Columbian Exposition. The group of skyscrapers represented the cutting edge of architectural design and were pushing the upper limit of contemporary engineering and science (note the use of the word ‘specimens’). Over half of the buildings are still standing today; with the Hartford Deposit Company, Columbus-Memorial, Champlain, and Security buildings all unfortunate casualties of modern development.
Drawn from photographs by E.J. Meeker. Published in the February 22, 1894 issue of Frank Leslie’s Weekly.
