Description

The map shows the area west of the Great Plains, from Kansas to California, and includes northern Mexico and southern Canada. Through illustrations, topographical details, and clever color shading, it depicts the American frontier as an inviting destination for all travelers. A variety of images from oil fields in Oklahoma to Crater Lake in Oregon suggest diverse sites that can be seen while traveling throughout the region. Luggage, fishing gear, and a picnic basket in the center of the compass rose add to the recreational temptation.

The Chevron Trail is not a route that can be found anywhere on the image – rather the map suggests the audience create their own trail through the West (using Chevron products along the way, of course). An advertisement for the company along the bottom of the page lists three ways the map could be enjoyed; framed, covering a scrapbook, or placed underneath a glass tabletop. This is sage advice, because the last place this map needs to be is in the glove compartment – no roads or travel information can be found anywhere!
