Description
This unusual ‘map’ advertisement highlights the potential impact of the Living Theater’s ‘guerilla theater’ productions, a popular performance element of the countercultural movement. The Kabbalistic Man, a mystical visualization of pseudo-religious tenets, revitalized during the Sexual Revolution, is divided into seven zones; each corresponding to different spiritual pathways and steps of revolutionary change. Images of performances are followed by information about the troupe (38 people in total, including children) that requires some deciphering.
The color-printed promo, signed on the last page by Bill Levy, was issued near the end of No. 21 of OZ, published in London in 1969. Other contents of note include numerous comic strips, an article titled ‘Living the Revolution’ by John Gerassi, an advertisement for Zapple Records, and a trippy centerfold illustration by prolific English psychedelic artist John Hurford.
Oz was a prominent British ‘underground’ youth magazine, published in London from 1967 to 1973, that championed subjects like drug use, radical politics, sexual liberation, popular music, and anti-establishment dissent. Known for its groundbreaking visual design and contributions from figures like Germaine Greer and Robert Crumb, the magazine served as an important, and often provocative, mouthpiece for the counterculture movement.
