Description

The modern conveniences of a national railway system meets the antiquarian charm of the British countryside on this map, published by British Railways in 1951. A rudimentary transportation map of Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland is complimented by illustrations of the historic architecture found throughout the isles.

Surrounding the image is a decorative border comprised of the arms of major cities and towns. Text at the bottom of the page reinforces the theme – “Here is a glimpse of the Britain to be seen and enjoyed, and revisited, the Britain of our common heritage of language and custom” – while promoting the “speed, comfort and safety” of the railways.

Credited to artist Cecil Meyer at C. & E. Layton Studios and printed in London by McCorquodale Co.
