Description
The Great Blizzard of 1888 lasted between March 11-14 and blanketed much of New England with upwards of four feet of snow – drifts were reported at over 50 feet high in certain locations. Many New York City residents were snowbound for a week or more.
This image, based on a sketch by W.H. Overend, was published as the title page of the April 7, 1888 edition of The Illustrated London News. It shows locals struggling against the elements, with one poor individual holding onto a lamp post for dear life!
