Description

This unusual world map was created by the American Radio Relay League (AARL) and published in 1985. The AARL was founded in 1914 and is still in operation today as the nation’s largest association of amateur radio enthusiasts.

The interesting projection (modified equidistant azimuthal) presents the globe centered on North America. Different radio zones are outlined in red and an index of radio prefixes for each available nation is provided in the margins. Using this map, an enthusiastic ‘ham’ could hop on the line and chat with someone in distant places like the Falkland Islands, Djibouti, or the Soviet Union at the beginning of the Glasnost period.
