Description

This beautiful pictorial map of the United States was illustrated by Lorin Thompson, an artist and muralist who created several compositions as part of the Works Progress Administration. Over fifty vignettes scattered across the image and labeled on the verso identify notable historic sites, important persons, natural attractions, and the robust industry. Together, they present an idyllic snapshot of the American identity in the mid-20th century.

The map was published by the General Foods Corporation in 1960 as a giveaway with ‘any purchase of Gravy Train’ (dog food), according to promotional text on the verso. There can also be found information on the presidential election held that year, pitting John F. Kennedy vs. Richard M. Nixon. Brief biographies of each candidate, an election scoreboard, a history of the White House, and portraits of past presidents are also provided.
