Description
This is an impressive visual catalog of the WWII campaign of the 29th Infantry Division. The unit was comprised of men from both the North and the South when it was first established during World War I, which is how it earned the nickname ‘The Blue and the Gray.’ The Civil War, First World War, and other historic events are referenced in several of the vignettes within the United States.
Across the pond, the action turns to contemporary events. Training in England is followed by debarkation in Normandy and a march across France. The division advanced through Belgium into Germany, up to the banks of the Roer River in early 1945. All along the way, charming captioned illustrations recount the wartime experience from the perspective of an American G.I. Vicious hand-to-hand combat is depicted alongside “a lady and a pig”. Women, transportation, alcohol, and the destruction of the enemy are commonly repeated themes on this and many other unit maps.
The image was created anonymously and reproduced in 1945 by the 669th Engineer Topographical Company. A third sheet covering the conclusion of the war was printed later in the year. The map is scarce and listed only once in WorldCat as of May 2024, at Texas A&M University. OCLC# 1368234511.

Condition Description: Formerly two separate sheets, professionally mounted onto linen for preservation and stability. A minor seam with visible differences in the color of the sea can be seen in the center. Trimmed margins on the left side and scattered spotting on the right side, concentrated most heavily in the corners. Good condition overall.
