Description

This gelatin silver print was issued as a wirephoto by United Press International, Inc. to accompany an April 9th, 1962 article about the danger areas around Johnston Island. According to the text on the verso;

“Map shows the circular area in the Pacific Ocean around Johnston Island, which the United States set aside April 9 as another nuclear test danger area. The radius of the circle is 470 nautical miles at the ocean’s surface, but the radius increases gradually until it reaches 700 miles at an altitude of 30,000 feet or above. The rectangular danger area around the British-owned Christmas Island, inset, which was announced April 4, has been extended on its eastern side by an additional rectangular area about 12 by 240 miles. The area around Christmas Island officially becomes a test area April 15, the Johnson Island site becomes a test area April 30.”

Note the Danger Zone extends to within the airspace above the Hawaiian Islands!
