Description
This antique copperplate engraved map presents the historic region of Canaan, situated along the eastern Mediterranean between the ancient cities of Sidon in the north and Gaza in the south. The upper left presents the 40-year wanderings of the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt (including the crossing of the Red Sea).
Adjacent is the same region, with the Twelve Tribes of Israel outlined and Levitical cities labeled (along with various other locations of interest and historic sites). The decorative cartouche features religious vestments and worship equipment, reflecting the sanctity of the region depicted.
The map was published as part of Antonio Zatta’s Atlante Novissimo in Venice in 1785. Subtext in the upper left indicates the map was issued with the privilege of the Venetian Senate, a 500+ year old legislative body that was about a decade away from utter dissolution.
