Description

This fun visitor’s guide to The Volunteer State was published in Nashville in 1982 by the Guide Company on behalf of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. That year, Knoxville was hosting a World’s Fair and was expecting thousands of visitors – a rich audience for the promotional piece. In addition to colorful advertisements, copy text, and descriptions of the state’s most popular attractions, the booklet includes a number of maps in a variety of formats. Of notable interest are a centerfold pictorial by Greyhound, a route map to Oak Ridge, outdoor recreation in eastern Tennessee, an outline map of the ambitious (and ultimately incomplete) Tennessee Parkway, and a cartographic promotion by George Dickel.
