Description

This charming allegorical map was published in an 1835 edition of the American Temperance Almanac, published by the New York State Temperance Society between 1833 and 1845. It shows a fantastical geographic summary of the perils of poor decisions, many of which arise from the consumption of alcohol.

The Ocean of Intemperance abuts the Continent of Poverty, home to the Alms House, Jail, and Tippers’ City. A route can be seen traversing these various features, only to end at the Gallows in the upper right. Only by traveling through the Sea of Total Abstinence, beckoned by a lighthouse, can one reach the rivers of Peace and Plenty.

The map is accompanied by two leaves of text which provide further warnings on the dangers of alcohol through stories, mostly aimed at children.
