Description
This interesting hand-colored map presents a large territory north of the Black Sea. The title refers to the Classical name of Crimea, Tauric Chersonese (the Tauric Peninsula), when it was first settled by Greeks around the 5th century BCE. Toponyms identify an interesting mix of places and geographic features, both ancient and modern. Many of the coastal cities were engaged in the lucrative Black Sea Slave trade.
The map was first created by Jocodus Hondius. This example was published in 1625-1626 as part of Purchas, his Pilgrimes, an influential volume on travel and exploration compiled by Samuel Purchas.
