“A Humorous, Informative Guide to America’s #1 Winter Sports-Land!”
1 in stock
Description
This quaint pictorial map was designed by Fred (also known as Fritz) Alseth in 1958 to promote the upcoming Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, California (note the author warming his feet in the lower right). Various seasonal activities like downhill, figure skating, and slalom are represented with pictorial vignettes and amusing caricatures. Prominent geographic features, transportation routes, and travelers’ amenities are also noted.
The decorative cartouche includes a legend, sarcastic ‘signs’, and a relevant Norse proverb – “Ull from Ydallr looks down And sings there a charm and three runes – Safety, spee,d and good snow for you!” Issued as a souvenir mailer, with a ski guide, mileage chart, list of churches, and details about Olympic events and venues on the verso.
