Description
Oriented with east at the top, this fascinating 16th-century map captures the modern-day Caucasus region using ancient classical geographic sources. The image includes portions of modern-day Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, though outdated toponyms and ancient kingdoms show little relation to today’s borders.
Pictorial elements show topography, a sailing ship, and locations of interest on the map including mountain passes (a gate), a sacrificial altar, and possibly a lighthouse along the coast.
The map was published in Venice by Girolamo Ruscelli in 1574 in a later edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia.
