Description

This interesting woodcut map shows a portion of Russia and Ukraine between the Black and Caspian Seas, with the Caucasus Mountains running across the bottom of the page. The region’s rugged topography is depicted pictorially, and the critically important mountain passes are shown as literal gates.

Tribes, cities, rivers, and prominent geographic features (including the Bosporus Straits) are all individually labeled. Latin text on verso. Published in Basel by Sebastian Munster circa 1550.
