Sunkist Map of California [with citrus industry teaching material]
$250.00
Informational packet with map, issued by citrus growers and aimed at California teachers.
Description
According to the typed letter stapled to the front of the set, this collection of materials was distributed by Sunkist Growers on behalf of the California citrus industry in lieu of previous promotional material no longer available. Discussion points and classroom exercises to accompany each subsequent page are provided in the letter, along with recommendations for other projects. These include a trip to a fruit wholesaler, a class party, and “dramatize a historical incident related to scurvy.”
Following the introductory letter are five sheets promoting the citrus industry, beginning with a black and white image of a lovely pictorial map attributable to Cal Rambeau. Overviews of the budding process and fruit transportation, a diagram of the process of photosynthesis, and a photograph of an evidently biased breakfast focused on orange juice are also included.
An interesting reminder of how maps can be used to further goals specific to a particular group, in this case the powerful citrus grower’s association of California.
