Description

This precisely detailed bird’s eye view is the hallmark of Hermann Bollman, a German graphic design artist who elevated the art of aerial perspective in the mid-20th century. Leveraging extensive use of aerial photography and precise mathematics, Bollman created some of the most detailed views of urban areas until the development of satellite imagery.

This particular example shows Stuttgart, Germany in June of 1966. It was published as one sheet in a six part series showing the growth of the city in the postwar environment. Bollmann used his exacting methods to create a set of maps that starkly visualize German postwar expansion.
