Description

This eye-catching propaganda poster was designed by David Stone Martin as OWI Poster No. 8 and published in 1942 by the U.S. Government Printing Office. Three arms gripping distinctive tools of war punch through a bright red background. The M1 Garand represents the fighting soldier, while the S-Wrench and pipe wrench reflect the contribution of America’s industrial workers. A decorative cuff on the rightmost arm indicates the tool might be held by a woman.

David Stone Martin (1913 – 1992) attended the Art Institute of Chicago and operated as an art director for the Office of War Information during World War II. He is best known for his postwar work, which includes dozens of popular jazz album covers.
