Description

This detailed post war street plan of Phoenix was compiled by William DeMerse and published locally by the Central Arizona Light and Power Company in 1946. A corresponding index at the top of the page allows the audience to easily find each route. The verso presents a diagrammatic overview, drawn by William McKay, of the numerous transportation options available for the city and surrounding area.

The fold-out map was issued as part of a promotional booklet welcoming guests (and potential new residents) to Phoenix. It’s nearly fifty pages contain a wealth of information about ‘The Valley of the Sun’, aimed at vacationers, farmers, motorists, health-seekers, veterans, outdoorsmen, scholars, entrepreneurs, and more. After the economic injection offered by military-related industry during WWII, Phoenix enjoyed a post war population boom fueled by young veterans seeking opportunity.
