Description

This map, drawn by T. P. Cartledge and first published in the early 1940’s, shows the city limits of Steubenville, situated on the banks of the Ohio River. Sections, townships, neighborhoods and block numbers are all individually labeled, and accompanying indices to additions and streets are provided at the bottom of the image. The large scale of the map, issued at 1″ to 500′, allows for a tremendous amount of detail to be shown.

This particular example was customized for use in the Central Engineering Department at the Pennsylvania Railroad. It has been dissected and mounted to linen for preservation and ease of storage. Manuscript updates provide bright color to the railroad routes in operation throughout the city, while a custom legend added to the bottom center identifies the three primary local operators; the Pennsylvania Railroad (red), the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad (yellow) and the Wheeling Steel Corporation Railroad (black).

Additional manuscript notations in black ink identify relevant locations such as freight yards and passenger stations.
