An uncommon map of Nevada from the early 1880s.

This finely detailed map of Nevada, published anonymously in the early 1880s, offers a comprehensive visual record of the “Silver State” during a pivotal era of industrial mining and transcontinental expansion. Utilizing sophisticated hachure engraving to depict the state’s rugged “Basin and Range” topography, the map masterfully illustrates the formidable mountain chains that define the Great Basin landscape.

A handful of wagon trails meander throughout the interspersed valleys, and the route of the Central Pacific Railroad – the lifeblood of the region – boldly bisects the state near the top of the page. Labeled geographic features include mountains, deserts, lakes, and more. Carson City, Reno, and Eureka are among the major towns identified, though smaller settlements are also noted (including Las Vegas – then just a small rancho on the Old Spanish Trail).

Based on the borders of Eureka County, the map was published around 1881. No maker’s mark or author’s signature, though the thin folded paper and rough binding edge in the upper left indicate it was likely bound as part of a prospectus or gazetteer. I’ve not been able to conclusively identify other copies.
