Description
This self styled “State Flower Map” is a wonderful example of domestic embroidery that became popular in the United States during the Great Depression. The official (and unofficial) flowers of the 48 states are individually represented in full color and labeled. Land borders between adjacent countries are shown in brown, while water borders are depicted with blue thread.
Decorative elements such as the compass rose, leaping fish, hashed border and scrollwork cartouche reflect the skill (and patience) of the artists; signed MG K and B K and dated 1938 in the lower right. A charming, one-of-a-kind reflection on America’s outdoor diversity and self-promotion.
