Description

Star Trek Chicago ’75 was a for-profit convention celebrating one of the most influential science fiction television series of all time. It was held at Chicago’s Conrad Hilton Hotel between August 22-24, 1975 and saw over 15,000 Trekkies pay a $20 admission fee (about $115 today) to meet the stars, shop for merchandise, and go behind the scenes of Gene Roddenberry’s iconic franchise, then less than 10 years old.

This 40-page souvenir program booklet offers a fascinating overview of Star Trek Chicago ’75. Fan art, character biographies, recommended restaurants, and a floor plan are included within the illustrated paper covers that boldly show the Starship Enterprise. This particular example is filled with signatures of actors, writers, and popular sci-fi personas who presented at the convention.

This list of autographs includes William Shatner (Captain Kirk); Leonard Nimoy (Commander Spock); Robert Bloch (writer); Harlan Ellison (writer); Hal Clement (writer); Kelly Freas (artist); and David Gerrold (writer). A major complaint with the convention organization was overlapping scheduling, preventing attendees from viewing every panel. This possibly explains the lack of other character signatures like James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, or George Takei.
