Description

This vibrant pictorial map of the United States celebrates the flora and fauna of each of the fifty states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Illustrated vignettes showcase many of the common species of plants and animals across the county, while darker shades of green highlight National Forest Areas and National Parks.

Charts on the verso outline the distribution of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish across America, while additional tables define the history of the National Parks and the Official State Birds, Trees, and Flowers. The map was published by the California Research Corporation, part of the Standard Oil Company, in 1959.

The chevron in the compass rose is an indicator of the underlying sponsor, who promoted at least 32 annual ‘Standard School Broadcasts’ in public schools across California. According to an accompanying booklet (not included), “The Standard School Broadcast is radio’s oldest network musical and educational program. It is an annual course in music-enjoyment, heard regularly by more than 2,000,000 students and their teachers in thousands of schools – from kindergarten to college.”
