Description
This map is a fantastic showcase of the natural diversity available in the United States, with detailed illustrations of sixty-eight different species of birds and fifty-five illustrations of various mammals, including big game, predators, and rodents. Skillful color shading alludes to the various ecosystems in which these animals thrive, from the swampy wetlands of Florida to the arid deserts of Nevada.
Numerous inset maps around the border show the nesting and wintering areas of various species, and National Forests are represented by symbols of pine trees throughout the image (and also listed in the text box in the lower left).
The map was originally drawn by Ira Moss in the early 1950’s and has been issued in a variety of formats in subsequent years. This particular example was ‘prepared for use by individuals and groups interested in hunting, conservation, and nature study’ by Shorewood Press, Inc. of New York in 1956.

Condition Description: Moderate wear along the outer edges of the sheet, most of which is confined to the margins. This includes several small chips and tears, a missing lower right corner, and scattered soiling. Two tears, about 2" each, enter the image and are repaired on the verso with archival tape. Some wrinkling in the image from where previously rolled. Overall in good or slightly better condition.
