Description
This swashbuckling pictorial map of the Caribbean heavily leverages pirate motifs and tropical themes to present a charming, if historically incongruous, regional overview. Twenty different letters scattered throughout the image identify locations of buried treasure, including unclaimed riches of Henry Morgan and $15,000,000 in pirate gold allegedly stashed somewhere near Fowler’s Bluff, Florida.
In a similar vein, forty different legends of sunken treasure, some dating as recently as the Civil War, are also noted numerically and described in the upper right. Sea monsters, sailing ships, and a decorative compass rose complete the image, surrounded by a border memorializing the region’s most notorious pirates.
The map was designed by G.W. Youngblood and published in New York by the Instant Sales Company in 1957. Likely issued as a promotional item, with distribution provided by the Van Schaack Premium Corp. of Chicago. Scarce, with only two entries noted in OCLC – at the Library of Congress and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Condition Description: Creasing and wear along old fold lines, including several areas of separation that have been repaired on the verso with archival tape. One area of the image is slightly affected, in the upper right text block. Minor wear also visible in the margins, including some small chips and a stain in the upper right. About good condition overall.
