Description

In late 1959, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation opened its Astronuclear Laboratory to assist in the development of nuclear propulsion at the height of the Space Race. This poster was likely issued shortly thereafter, based on the variety of spacecraft depicted within the image.

An interesting mix of the real and fantastical are vibrantly illustrated, with a few vessels that fell somewhere in between. For example, the Pioneer I probe, Mercury capsule, Dyna-Soar bomber, and X-15 were all in various stages of production or development. The two-man deep space ship, however, remained purely in the realm of fiction.
