Description
With the advent of the 20th century, world’s fairs and exhibitions were all the rage. Paris led the charge in 1900 with the Exposition Universelle (or Paris Exposition), designed to celebrate the achievements of the past century and acceleration into the next with new inventions like diesel engines, talking films, and escalators.
This souvenir of the fair and guidebook to Paris is approximately 70 pages long and was published by one of the first modern department stores, Le Bon Marche (The Good Deal). Aside from information about the fair, Paris attractions, transportation, and accommodations, the booklet includes a comprehensive index of Paris streets and plans of the Exposition grounds and the Champs D’Elysee.
The highlight is the large (27.5″ x 20.5″) folding map of Paris tipped at the end of the book. This map includes the original distance ruler and boldly depicts Magasins du Bon Marche, the first successful department store in Paris and a model for future stores throughout Europe and the United States. Condition Description: Large folding map of Paris affixed to the back cover of a 68 pp. guidebook of Paris and souvenir of the 1900 Exposition Universelle. The map is on toned sheet that shows some light to moderate wear along fold lines, plus a few spots of rust from the tab of the attached measuring string. The guidebook's contents are complete, save for the front cover, but the string binding is coming loose, especially on the first two pages. Good condition overall.
