Description

This quaint pictorial map was designed by Fred Alseth (note the author warming his feet in the lower right) in 1958 to promote the upcoming Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, California. Various seasonal activities like downhill, figure skating, and slalom are represented with pictorial vignettes and amusing caricatures. Prominent geographic features, transportation routes, and traveler’s amenities are also noted.

The decorative cartouche includes a legend, sarcastic ‘signs’, and a relevant Norse proverb – “Ull from Ydallr looks down And sings thee a charm and three runes – Safety, speed and good snow for you!” Issued as a souvenir mailer, with a ski guide, mileage chart, list of churches, and details about Olympic events and venues on the verso.
