Description
The election of Richard Nixon in 1968 saw a drastic change in the American strategy during the Vietnam War. A calculated reduction in U.S. forces and military action was accompanied by a corresponding increase in material and operational support for local ARVN troops.
This map, issued in the October 17th, 1969 issue of the Indianapolis News, captures a snapshot of the gradual process (known collectively as the ‘Vietnamization’ strategy) that was largely complete by 1972. Dozens of units are identified at 29 different spots within the primary image and two accompanying inset maps.
A few small annotations reference other facilities, such as a POW camp for hard-core Communists and ‘refuge area for Viet Cong in Cambodia.’
