Description
This fine steel engraved map features original hand color and was published in New York by J.H. Colton & Co. in 1855. The emphasis is on transportation routes in operation throughout the state, with canals, railroads (both completed and under construction) and roads shown and labeled according to the accompanying legend.
Post offices, railroad depots, the state capital and county towns are also noted. The vast coastal lowlands are shown pictorially, with a few notable topographic features like Mt. Hope and Hell Hole Swamp individually named.
An inset map in the lower left shows the city of Charleston and it’s important harbor, including Ft. Sumter where the first blows of the Civil War would fall less than six years after publication.
