Description
The Battle of Molino del Rey took place on September 8, 1847 outside of Mexico City between the American forces under General Winfield Scott and Mexican troops led by General Antonio León. It was part of Scott’s thrust to the capital from the coast – an effort to bring a conclusive end to the war – but the result was bloody and largely inconclusive.
This map was drawn by Edmund Hardcastle, an engineer in the 1st Division of the U.S. Army who took place in the engagement. American and Mexican positions are identified according to the legend in the lower center, with fields of fire and unit advances noted by finely engraved lines. Chapultepec Castle can be seen in the upper right and would be the site of a subsequent engagement between the combatants.
Engraved on stone by A. Kollner and lithographed by P.S. Duval in Philadelphia. Published around 1848 as part of a Congressional report.
