Description

This interesting little coastal chart was published in the Dublin edition of Cook’s Voyages around 1785. It presents an outline of Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, an area whose ownership was disputed among the British, Spanish, and Russian fur traders who operated there.

Cook landed in March of 1778 claiming the region for Britain. Conflicting claims by Spain and the capture of British vessels led to the Nootka Crisis of 1789.
