Description

Looking to emulate the success of Disneyland, Texan real estate developer Angus Wynne, Jr. envisioned a family-friendly amusement park with a Lonestar theme. Six Flags Over Texas opened on a 205-acre plot in the summer of 1961 and was named for the six nations that have governed the state: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. The park saw tremendous growth in subsequent decades, and is shown here on this commemorative 1991 souvenir map.

Dozens of rides, attractions, games, restaurants, and guest amenities are individually illustrated in a lively pictorial style across the six themed regions. Highlights include the 300 ft. oil derrick, Texas Cliffhanger, Shockwave, Flashback, and the Texas Giant – opened in 1990 and was the world’s tallest wooden roller coaster at the time. Also of interest is a list of corporate sponsors in the lower left – an unusual inclusion in souvenir maps of this type.
