Description
This charming souvenir map was designed by R. Pierce (signature, lower right) and copywritten in 1965 by Great Southwest Corporation, the parent company of Six Flags Over Texas. The world-famous amusement park began operations in 1961 as a temporary attraction designed to draw revenue and interest in a large commercial construction project. Real estate developer Angus G. Wynne, Jr., whose Great Southwest Industrial District was struggling financially, got the idea for a Texas-themed park after a family visit to Disneyland. The initial success prompted further investment, leading to the entertainment juggernaut of the modern era.
The map reflects a more modest expansion in the early years of the parks’ operations. A stylized pictorial overview shows the six major areas representing the state’s governing bodies – France, Spain, Mexico, Texas, the United States, and the Confederacy. The Log Flume, Boomtown, and Skull Rock are all recent additions to the attraction list. Other guest amenities include 75 acres of parking, a heliport, souvenir shops, refreshment stands, and the Six Flags railroad that circumvents the park.
