The Corn Palace City of the World!

Description
This rare map provides a wonderfully detailed overview of Sioux City, Iowa, during a period of intense urbanization and industrialization. The 1880s saw the population grow from 7,500 (1880) to nearly 40,000 by the end of the decade. The introduction of streetcars, electric lights, water works, and a diversified local economy propelled the city into the modern era. This commercial success was enjoyed by many cities throughout the Midwest, prompted by a boost in agricultural productivity, technological developments (like refrigerated railcars), and larger populations (thanks in large part to emigrant communities).
The resulting civic pride manifested in a fascinating local phenomenon called the Corn Palace. These elaborate, though temporary structures, were constructed to celebrate local products and boost a city’s appeal. The Sioux City Corn Palace, constructed in 1887, appears to be the first, inspiring the late 19th-century trend (and possibly the production of this map).
The image presents Sioux City during what can perhaps be described as its Golden Era. President Grover Cleveland visited the year prior to publication! An interesting patchwork of neighborhoods and subdivisions feature ample parks (notably, Riverside Park), accessible by streetcar lines and a well-organized system of roads. Numerous steam railroads and their related infrastructure (yards, depots, etc.) are shown, connecting to a robust industrial scene of meatpacking plants, grain elevators, and factories. South Sioux City, organized the year prior, is also shown south of the Missouri River.
The map was compiled from official records by the local engineering firm of Wakefield, Hill & Wingeland and copy written in 1888. Published by L.H. Everts & Co. of Chicago and Philadelphia. The piece is quite scarce – I’ve been unable to locate other market records (save this example) and there are no entries listed in WorldCat as of May 2025. One copy has been located at the University of Northern Iowa.
