Description

This print shows one anonymous scene in a series of ongoing conflicts between cattle ranchers and sheep herders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Sheep Wars actually included at least 120 such “raids” that took place in Texas, Arizona, Wyoming and Colorado and saw an estimated 100,000 sheep slaughtered.

Wood engraving after a sketch by Paul Frenzeny for Harper’s Weekly. Frenzeny (1840 – 1902) and Jules Tavernier (1844-1889) were commissioned by Harper’s to record their impressions of the American West, resulting in nearly 100 published illustrations.
