Description

This color lithographed map of the United States was published in Chicago by Rand McNally on behalf of the Fred Harvey Company around 1944. One side shows a simple overview of the contiguous 48 states, noting primary transportation routes, population statistics, and major urban areas. The verso offers a pictorial representation of the myriad of insignia used to distinguish different members of the Army, Navy, and Marines.

Founded in 1876, the Fred Harvey Company began by establishing travel accommodations along rail lines throughout the American West. It pioneered the Harvey House restaurant chain, known for clean dining and friendly service. By the outbreak of World War II, the company had grown into a hospitality empire, serving American troops traveling across the nation by rail.
