Description
“Dear Mother, This card will give you a much better picture of events than I could write. Will drop a few lines shortly. Hope you have a wonderful Xmas, and that Leone (sp?) can get home. Love, Al.”
This heartfelt, but well-censored, letter was written from an American soldier to his mother back home during the holiday season of 1944. The greeting card gave loved ones a sense of confidence and pride in what was being accomplished overseas in exchange for so many feelings of loss, absence, and loneliness.
One side shows a simple route map of the VII Corps across France and into Germany, with seven major actions between D-Day and early September, 1944 noted at the top. The verso presents the aforementioned note, in addition to a legend identifying the divisional symbols used on the map.
